Antarctica in general. [Jan. 12th, 2007|12:53 pm]
I traveled to Antarctica via plane from somewhere in central america. Then we got on a ship, and traveled through the thrillingly  enormous Drake Passage. Onward to the Penguins! We passed almost all of the way around the the continent in near a month. It was so beautiful, and it was fun. The only things to see were ice, and a few penguins though. That is what a 5 star cruise liner is for!

Day 8. (Japan) [Jan. 12th, 2007|07:27 am]
Today the tour guide took us to what they say is called one of Japan's Greatest gardens, Kenrokuen, or "The garden of six qualities." They said it dates back to the 1670's. Adjacent to the gardens is the Ishikawa Prefecture Crafts Museum, and it has more than 30 traditional crafts, including the famous Kanazawa gold leaf that the tour guide said has been in production since 1593. That afternoon, we traveled along the sea of Japan to Fushumi to visit the Fushumi Inari Shrine. It's gates were so beautiful, and there were so many! Then we saw a performance done by some Shinto girls (Miko). After which, we ended up in Kyoto.

Day 7. (Japan) [Jan. 12th, 2007|07:14 am]
Woke up and took a drive through the Shokawa Valley, and were soon in Shirakawa. The tour guide said that this place is home to some UNESCO World Heratage Sites because of the unique joined hands style homes(Gassho-Zukiri) that are thatched. I wandered around the rest of the day, and went to the hotel soon after.

Day 3. (Africa) [Jan. 12th, 2007|03:17 am]
I went to Casablanca first. Inside were the Royal Palace, Mohammed V Square, and a view of the Hassan Mosque. I left for Rabat, the capital of Moracco, and got there quickly. I saw the ancient ruins of Chella, the Oudaya Kasbah, and Royal Palace, and the Hassan Tower. My day was very full.

Day 6. (Japan) [Jan. 12th, 2007|01:52 am]
The group went to the morning market this morning. There were a lot of fruits and vegetables. I just bought some rice. Then we went to the San-Machi Suji historic district. The tour guide  says that this place is famous for it's sake distilleries, and laquerware shops. Merchants buy and sell there like they have for over 300 years. Then to the Kusakabe Heritage house, because it is made of late 19th century architecture. It is very traditional in style. In the afternoon, we take a short ride to Hida Minzoku-Mura Folk Village. It is a collection of traditional buildings and Farmhouses. And numerous artifacts relating to the life and style of the village people. WE got to watch lacquer work, basket making, wood carving and a lot of other stuff. It was so awesome.

Day 6. (Brazil) [Jan. 12th, 2007|01:40 am]
After breakfast, I drove about 17 miles to the neighboring 18 century mining town of Mariana (Like out Mariana's supermarket... he he). THis little town is a demonstration of the culture that arose during the peak of colonial power. The houses had balconies of wood, iron and soapstone. I had dinner there in a small restaurant and then went back to the hotel.

Day 5. (Brazil) [Jan. 12th, 2007|01:35 am]
After breakfast, I took a short flight to Belo Horizante. Brazil's 3rd largest city and capital of the state of Minas Gerias. A one and a half hour drive later, I am in Ouro Preto. It is a fully preserved colonial town of the 18th century. I am going to stay here for 2 more days, until the trip is over, and I fly home. After lunch, I learned that that city has a population of 110,000 people. More than twice that of New York, but minuscule compared to Tokyo's 8 million. The incredible wealth is remnants of the gold rush in 1698, and the city is well come-by. I went home and sleep in the 5 star hotel. The bed was very soft.

Day 4. (Brazil) [Jan. 12th, 2007|01:26 am]
After breakfast, I drove through atlantic forest, to the mountain retreat of Petropolis. It is 3,000 feet above sea level. It is still the home to the heir of the throne , the great grandson of Dom Pedro II and the founder of petropolis. It is said that the city has a distinctly european flavour. I would say it is very european. Next I went to the imperial museum. It had a tour that showed you every day life in the 19th century as royalty. After lunch, I went to the tombs of 2 of Brazil's emperors, and their families. Then I went to the home of Santo Dumont. He was the founder of aviation in brazil, and the originator of the wristwatch! I went and stayed at the hotel for the night, after a slim dinner.
